Monster Mandarin is a play-based, immersive learning experience for kids of all ages. Whether your kids are new to Mandarin or nearly fluent, our age-appropriate, customized curriculum adapts and grows with your family.

I is for immersion. We immerse ourselves in the things we love and the things we are passionate about. It's the same with foreign language; immerse yourself in the language, the culture, and the learning.
M is for Mastery Learning. We must master crawling before walking and walking before running. Building on firm foundations is something we understand and reinforce.

P is for play-based. Learning can and should be fun. Whoever tried to force learning on kids got it wrong (in our not-so-humble opinion). If a child is having fun, learning is natural.

Mastery Learning

Kids are all different. They behave differently, and they learn differently. The speed of learning matters less than retaining and recalling what was learned. This is why Monster Mandarin utilizes the Mastery Learning model. Simply, this means we don’t move on until your child can recall at least 90% of the content taught. Doing this ensures we build on a solid foundation, rather than a shaky one.

What is Singapore Math?

Singapore Math is a method of teaching math that is proven to be highly effective, not only because of some of the highest test scores in the world, but more importantly because it teaches kids how to reason mathematically, rather than through rote memorization.

Number Bonds‍

  • Number bonds are a novel way to visually demonstrate part-whole relationships between a set of numbers, e.g., a whole of 8 can be made up of a part of 6 and a part of 2.

Bar Modeling

  • Bar modeling provides a visual representation of a set of numbers to teach less than / greater than as well as visual fractions.

Mental Math

  • Mental math is a technique that allows for ease of calculation without writing anything down, e.g., the add the ones strategy involves grouping two-digit numbers into tens and ones such as 14 ⇒ 4 and 10.

Word Problems

  • Word problems are often challenging for most students. That’s why Singapore Math teaches applied math using CPA combined with bar modeling to fully understand word problems at their core.

Singapore Math - Primary Math & Dimensions

As you may have seen Singapore Math comes in a number of versions and flavors, each with its own set of pros and cons. Some versions prefer to put pictorial before concrete such as the Math in Focus program. Others, such as Dimensions, offer more activities and more full color pages in the Teacher’s Guides. Primary Math is the tried and true program, a precursor to Dimensions, which many teachers and parents prefer.

Monster Mandarin utilizes the Primary Math program, with the Dimensions program being developed for release later this year. Regardless of the program, they all share common teaching models such as CPA, number bonds, bar modeling, mental math, and word problems with a strong focus on understanding math, rather than memorizing it.

Monster Mandarin’s content, lesson plans, and age-appropriate activities are all developed in-house with slight modification of content from Singapore Math, Inc.’s collection of Primary Mathematics, U.S. Edition and Dimensions Math books and materials.

Materials and Supplies

Key to learning math the Singapore Math way requires some basic materials and supplies, all of which are typically readily available in your home such as straws, rubber bands, blocks, shapes, etc. However, if you prefer, feel free to purchase new materials and supplies dedicated to the Monster Mandarin Singapore Math program.

Math manipulatives are objects that your kids can touch, hold, and manipulate with their hands to better understand the math concepts being taught. Typical examples include blocks, cubes, dry beans / pasta, counting bears, and clothes pins.

There are categories of manipulatives that will be useful is your child progresses through the Singapore Math curriculum with Monster Mandarin.
